FAQ
Q. Why is there a womens’ mini-conf?
A. Historically, very few women attended linux.conf.au. The theory was not that they were not interested, but rather felt that they would not fit in by being one of very few women.
When the womens’ mini-conf was run in 2007 more women felt comfortable attending, knowing that they would not be alone. Consequently, the female ratio at linux.conf.au 2007 was a record high of 1 in 10 women.
Q. Can I come just to the mini-conf and not to the entire linux.conf.au conference?
Yes! Last minute day passes are available.
Q. Are men allowed to attend and/or speak?
A. Men are most certainly welcome to attend the womens’ mini-conf.
However we reserve speaking slots for women. This is for the purpose of giving women speaking experience so that they can be prepared for major conference speaking tasks, and integrate into the conference main without feeling like a total novice.
Q. Can you sponsor my travel/accomodation?
A. Unfortunately, no. We do not have a budget. Sorry
Q. Who organises the miniconference?
A. Members of AussieChix, the Australian LinuxChix chapter. This year Melissa Draper did the initial proposal and the call for papers, and Robyn Manning and Mary Gardiner are organising the event. See the contact page to get in touch with us.
Q. Can I help out?
A. Sure! We especially need helpers at the conference itself, but could also use assistance before that. Join the wlca list to find out what needs doing.
